What is bamboo and MicroModal textile made of?

Alternative fabrics are increasingly being used to make clothing. In this article, we’ll tell you all about it and what you can make with it.

Two such emerging textile types – suitable for underwear, for example – are made from bamboo and MicroModal. But how are these fabrics actually made and what can you use them for?

Both textile types are produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG. Bamboo is exceptionally suitable for making men’s underwear, shirts, and women’s slips. MicroModal is a fabric perfect for underwear and polo shirts. MicroModal is a fabric perfect for underwear and polo shirts.

Tencel Lyocell MicroModal fibers are obtained from beechwood, and bamboo textile fibers come from the bamboo plant. Lenzing AG cultivates both materials in environmentally friendly nurseries.

How is bamboo textile made?

Bamboo fibers are obtained through a chemical process from easily growing bamboo stalks. To initiate this process, bamboo’s cellulose is broken down, creating a viscous and gel-like material. Rayon yarn is then spun from this material, resulting in viscose cellulose fabric.Only the by-products and chemicals used in this process, such as carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide, are environmentally polluting.Viscose cellulose can be used to make various sustainable bamboo clothing items, like t-shirts, spaghetti tops, or even comfortable string panties, women’s boxer shorts, or snug-fitting men’s boxer shorts. By choosing bamboo, you ensure you have a sustainable, comfortable, and beautiful garment that will last a long time.

Is the use of bamboo textile sustainable and environmentally friendly?

The beauty of bamboo is that it grows quickly, requires little water, and doesn’t need pesticides to grow. A bit of sunlight is enough. The bamboo plant does the rest.

Once the bamboo has grown enough, it is cut and processed into fibers. After pruning, the mother stem of the plant regenerates new stems, allowing bamboo to be harvested several times. This makes it a sustainable fabric for making men’s and women’s underwear, as well as a men’s t-shirt with the perfect fit.

How is MicroModal textile made?

Another way to make more sustainable clothing is by using MicroModal fabric. This type of fabric is made from beechwood. But how does this process work exactly?Well, cellulose is obtained through a chemical process. This cellulose is then flattened and processed into large white sheets, soaked in caustic soda, crumbled into smaller pieces, soaked in carbon disulfide, and finally spun into yarn. With this yarn, you can make a beautiful polo shirt, an ultra-soft string, or a perfectly fitting men’s brief.

The environmental friendliness and sustainability of MicroModal fabric

This process is faster and less environmentally taxing than obtaining bamboo fabric. It is also only produced in developed countries, so the working conditions are always good.Another positive aspect is that MicroModal fiber is entirely biodegradable, requires little water and energy for production, and achieves a remarkable 99.6% resource recovery during the production process. So, your discarded men’s boxer shorts don’t harm the environment. Some wastewater is generated, but it is not harmful to the environment. This is why MicroModal® fiber has the EU Ecolabel. So, you can be sure that you are purchasing a sustainable and environmentally friendly fabric! And the beechwood used for Tencel Lyocell MicroModal® fibers comes from sustainable beech tree nurseries with the FSC certification. This abbreviation stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It means that the wood has been harvested and processed responsibly and environmentally friendly. That’s always a reassuring thought when you put on your new polo shirt, women’s panties, or boxer shorts. That by choosing this clothing, you are contributing to a cleaner environment.

The environmental friendliness and sustainability of MicroModal fabric

In addition to being a sustainable type of fabric, MicroModal fabric has more advantages. It is incredibly soft – due to the thinness of the fiber – and hardly shrinks.

These synthetic fibers are also colorfast and easy to dye. This means that the possibilities of MicroModal fabric are endless, and you will enjoy it for a long time. Additionally, it is moisture-wicking, lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying. So, it is an ideal fabric for various types of clothing, like our comfortable, breathable, and available in many colors polo shirts for men – allowing you to look fashionable in no time – and our underwear for men and women.

Artificial yet natural?

The MicroModal textile fiber is also an artificial fiber because the producer needs to go through several steps. But because it is made from natural raw materials, in this case, sustainable beech trees, it is also called a semi-synthetic fabric. This may sound a bit contradictory, a naturally artificial fiber, but that’s what it is. The natural material of the beech tree is broken down into a gel-like substance in this case. After that, it is possible – after a complex chemical process – to create new fibers that can be used to make various clothing items such as men’s underwear.

Washing and ironing bamboo textile and MicroModal textile

The advantage of fabrics like MicroModal and bamboo textile is that they have antibacterial properties. Washing at lower temperatures is an option because of this. This is good for the environment and your energy costs. A wash at 30 degrees is sufficient to clean your boxer shorts, briefs, shirt, or string.Furthermore, these fabrics are wrinkle-resistant, shape-retaining, and anti-static. So, there is no need to iron your bamboo shirt or polo shirt made of MicroModal after washing.

When should you buy new underwear?

But when is it time to buy new underwear? And do you choose a bamboo boxer or a MicroModal boxer? Or do you just go for a reliable men’s brief?

The most logical and straightforward answer is: when there are holes in your underpants or when the fabric is completely worn out. Everyone understands that it’s time to purchase new women’s or men’s underwear in those cases.

But did you know that underwear also has a shelf life? Not like food, of course, but it is advisable to replace them after about a year. Because wearing them introduces bacteria into the fabric. While washing removes them, over time, residues remain in the underwear, no matter how well or hot you wash it. This is inevitable. These bacteria can lead to (urinary tract) infections and other issues you’d rather avoid. That’s why we recommend replacing your underwear – whether it’s a thong, boxer, or brief – every year. If you choose, for example, our MicroModal or bamboo underwear, you can be sure you’re opting for a sustainable option. So, it’s a win-win situation.
